|Kinematics of the local universe . XII. 21-cm line measurements of 586 galaxies with the new Nançay receiver|
This paper presents 586 new 21-cm neutral hydrogen line measurementscarried out with the FORT receiver of the meridian transit Nançayradiotelescope in the period July 2000-March 2003. This observationalprogramme is part of a larger project aiming at collecting an exhaustiveand magnitude-complete HI extragalactic catalogue for Tully-Fisherapplications. |Redshift-Distance Survey of Early-Type Galaxies: Spectroscopic Data|
We present central velocity dispersions and Mg2 line indicesfor an all-sky sample of ~1178 elliptical and S0 galaxies, of which 984had no previous measures. This sample contains the largest set ofhomogeneous spectroscopic data for a uniform sample of ellipticalgalaxies in the nearby universe. These galaxies were observed as part ofthe ENEAR project, designed to study the peculiar motions and internalproperties of the local early-type galaxies. Using 523 repeatedobservations of 317 galaxies obtained during different runs, the dataare brought to a common zero point. These multiple observations, takenduring the many runs and different instrumental setups employed for thisproject, are used to derive statistical corrections to the data and arefound to be relatively small, typically <~5% of the velocitydispersion and 0.01 mag in the Mg2 line strength. Typicalerrors are about 8% in velocity dispersion and 0.01 mag inMg2, in good agreement with values published elsewhere.
|Redshift-Distance Survey of Early-Type Galaxies: Circular-Aperture Photometry|
We present R-band CCD photometry for 1332 early-type galaxies, observedas part of the ENEAR survey of peculiar motions using early-typegalaxies in the nearby universe. Circular apertures are used to tracethe surface brightness profiles, which are then fitted by atwo-component bulge-disk model. From the fits, we obtain the structuralparameters required to estimate galaxy distances using theDn-σ and fundamental plane relations. We find thatabout 12% of the galaxies are well represented by a pure r1/4law, while 87% are best fitted by a two-component model. There are 356repeated observations of 257 galaxies obtained during different runsthat are used to derive statistical corrections and bring the data to acommon system. We also use these repeated observations to estimate ourinternal errors. The accuracy of our measurements are tested by thecomparison of 354 galaxies in common with other authors. Typical errorsin our measurements are 0.011 dex for logDn, 0.064 dex forlogre, 0.086 mag arcsec-2 for<μe>, and 0.09 for mRC,comparable to those estimated by other authors. The photometric datareported here represent one of the largest high-quality and uniformall-sky samples currently available for early-type galaxies in thenearby universe, especially suitable for peculiar motion studies.Based on observations at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO),National Optical Astronomy Observatory, which is operated by theAssociation of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., undercooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation (NSF);European Southern Observatory (ESO); Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory(FLWO); and the MDM Observatory on Kitt Peak.
|Optical surface photometry of a sample of disk galaxies. II. Structural components|
This work presents the structural decomposition of a sample of 11 diskgalaxies, which span a range of different morphological types. The U, B,V, R, and I photometric information given in Paper I (color andcolor-index images and luminosity, ellipticity, and position-angleprofiles) has been used to decide what types of components form thegalaxies before carrying out the decomposition. We find and model suchcomponents as bulges, disks, bars, lenses and rings.
|A Visual Search for Galaxies in a Milky Way Region around the North Supergalactic Pole|
We performed a visual systematic search for galaxies on POSS II(B)plates in a Milky Way region between l~=32deg-68° andb~=-4deg to 19°. This region partly contains the LocalVoid, and the north supergalactic pole exists at the central part. Thesurveyed area was about 560 deg2, and a total of 11,310galaxies and galaxy candidates with sizes of 0.1′ or greater wereidentified. Among the detected objects, 152 have been given in galaxycatalogs and 159, including 49 known galaxies, are associated with IRASpoint sources. We made a catalog of the detected objects, in which theposition in (α, δ) and (l, b), the size, and the features ofthe image and multiplicity are given for each object. The surface numberdensities of the detected objects almost depend on the Galacticlatitude. In the surveyed region, there is no nearby cluster and thereis an outstanding concentration of galaxies at l=7deg-12°and 4000-5000 km s-1.
|Optical Surface Photometry of a Sample of Disk Galaxies. I. Observations and Data Reduction|
We present accurate optical surface photometry in the U, B, V, R, and Ipassbands for 11 disk galaxies. The sample has been selected in order tostudy the different morphological structures present in disk galaxiesand includes all morphological types. For each galaxy, we presentsurface brightness, ellipticity, and position angle radial profiles fromellipse fits to the isophotes. Color index images and color indexprofiles in U-B, B-V, and B-I are also shown. The photometricinformation obtained is crucial to understanding the differentmorphological structures presented in all these galaxies, and to obtaintheir mass distributions. The latter topic will be the subject of aforthcoming paper. Based on observations made with the Isaac NewtonTelescope, operated on the island of La Palma by the Isaac Newton Groupin the Spanish Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos of the Institutode Astrofísica de Canarias.
|Arcsecond Positions of UGC Galaxies|
We present accurate B1950 and J2000 positions for all confirmed galaxiesin the Uppsala General Catalog (UGC). The positions were measuredvisually from Digitized Sky Survey images with rms uncertaintiesσ<=[(1.2")2+(θ/100)2]1/2,where θ is the major-axis diameter. We compared each galaxymeasured with the original UGC description to ensure high reliability.The full position list is available in the electronic version only.
|Correlations between Structural Parameters of Disk Galaxies|
We have obtained (in BVRI filters) the structural parameters of fourdisk galaxies, spanning a range of different morphological types. Webelieve the parameters are reliable because an extensive part of thegalaxies' disks are free from contamination by other components, and adetailed photometric method has been used to derive these quantities.Several correlations between their structural parameters have been foundwhich support: a disk increasingly optically thick towards the center ofeach galaxy; the older population of the bulge being more extensive thanthe younger; and a `Scaled' Hubble sequence for the spirals.
|Total magnitude, radius, colour indices, colour gradients and photometric type of galaxies|
We present a catalogue of aperture photometry of galaxies, in UBVRI,assembled from three different origins: (i) an update of the catalogueof Buta et al. (1995) (ii) published photometric profiles and (iii)aperture photometry performed on CCD images. We explored different setsof growth curves to fit these data: (i) The Sersic law, (ii) The net ofgrowth curves used for the preparation of the RC3 and (iii) A linearinterpolation between the de Vaucouleurs (r(1/4) ) and exponential laws.Finally we adopted the latter solution. Fitting these growth curves, wederive (1) the total magnitude, (2) the effective radius, (3) the colourindices and (4) gradients and (5) the photometric type of 5169 galaxies.The photometric type is defined to statistically match the revisedmorphologic type and parametrizes the shape of the growth curve. It iscoded from -9, for very concentrated galaxies, to +10, for diffusegalaxies. Based in part on observations collected at the Haute-ProvenceObservatory.
|Large-Scale Structure at Low Galactic Latitude|
We have extended the CfA Redshift Survey to low galactic latitudes toinvestigate the relation between the Great Wall in the North GalacticCap and the Perseus-Pisces chain in the South Galactic Cap. We presentredshifts for 2020 galaxies in the Catalogue of Galaxies and of Clustersof Galaxies (Zwicky et al. 1961-68, CGCG) in the following regions: 4^h^<= α <= 8^h^, 17^h^ <= α <= 20^h^, 0^deg^ <=δ <= 45^deg^. In these regions, the redshift catalogue includes1664 galaxies with B(0) <= 15.5 (of which 820 are newly measured) andis 97% complete. We also include redshifts for an additional 356galaxies in these regions with B(O) > 15.5; of these, 148 werepreviously unmeasured. The CGCG samples the galaxy distribution down tob_II_ = 10^deg^. In this paper, we discuss the acquisition and reductionof the spectra, and we examine the qualitative features of the redshiftdistribution. The Great Wall and the Perseus-Pisces chain are not simplyconnected across the Zone of Avoidance. These structures, which at firstappear to be coherent on scales of ~100 h^-1^ Mpc or more, actually formthe boundaries of neighboring voids of considerably smaller scale,approximately 50h^-1^ Mpc. The structures delineated by ouroptically-selected sample are qualitatively similar to those detected bythe far-infrared-selected IRAS 1.2 Jansky Survey (Fisher et al. 1995).Although the IRAS survey probes more deeply into the Zone of Avoidance,our optically-selected survey provides better sampling of structures atb_II_ >= 10^deg^.
|The fundamental plane of early-type galaxies: stellar populations and mass-to-light ratio.|
We analyse the residuals to the fundamental plane (FP) of ellipticalgalaxies as a function of stellar-population indicators; these are basedon the line-strength parameter Mg_2_ and on UBVRI broad-band colors, andare partly derived from new observations. The effect of the stellarpopulations accounts for approximately half the observed variation ofthe mass-to-light ratio responsible for the FP tilt. The residual tiltcan be explained by the contribution of two additional effects: thedependence of the rotational support, and possibly that of the spatialstructure, on the luminosity. We conclude to a constancy of thedynamical-to-stellar mass ratio. This probably extends to globularclusters as well, but the dominant factor would be here the luminositydependence of the structure rather than that of the stellar population.This result also implies a constancy of the fraction of dark matter overall the scalelength covered by stellar systems. Our compilation ofinternal stellar kinematics of galaxies is appended.
|Total and effective colors of 501 galaxies in the Cousins VRI photometric system|
Total color indices (V-R)T, (V-I)T and effectivecolor indices (V-R)e, (V-I)e in the Cousins VRIphotometric system are presented for 501 mostly normal galaxies. Thecolors are computed using a procedure outlined in the Third ReferenceCatalogue of Bright Galaxies (RC3) whereby standard color curvesapproximated by Laplace-Gauss integrals are fitted to observedphotoelectric multiaperture photometry. 11 sources of such photometrywere used for our analysis, each source being assigned an appropriateweight according to a rigorous analysis of residuals of the data fromthe best-fitting standard color curves. Together with the integrated B-Vand U-B colors provided in RC3, our analysis widens the range ofwavelength of homogeneously defined colors of normal galaxies of allHubble types. We present color-color and color-type relations that canbe modeled to understand the star formation history of galaxies.
|Integrated photoelectric magnitudes and color indices of bright galaxies in the Johnson UBV system|
The photoelectric total magnitudes and color indices published in theThird Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies (RC3) are based on ananalysis of approximately equals 26,000 B, 25,000 B-V, and 17,000 U-Bmultiaperture measurements available up to mid 1987 from nearly 350sources. This paper provides the full details of the analysis andestimates of internal and external errors in the parameters. Thederivation of the parameters is based on techniques described by theVaucouleurs & Corwin (1977) whereby photoelectric multiaperture dataare fitted by mean Hubble-type-dependent curves which describe theintegral of the B-band flux and the typical B-V and U-B integrated colorgradients. A sophisticated analysis of the residuals of thesemeasurements from the curves was made to allow for the random andsystematic errors that effect such data. The result is a homogeneous setof total magnitudes BTA total colors(B-V)T and (U-B)T, and effective colors(B-V)e and (U-B)e for more than 3000 brightgalaxies in RC3.
|Velocity dispersions for elliptical galaxies. I. First set of measurements.|
Measurements of central velocity dispersions and heliocentric radialvelocities are presented for 94 field galaxies. Among these, 5 newradial velocities and 80 new central velocity dispersions are obtained.Reduction was performed independently by cross-correlation,Fourier-quotient and Fourier-correlation-quotient methods.

|Imaging spectroscopy of five QSOs|
Direct images and spatially resolved spectra have been obtained for fiveQSOs having a wide range of radio, optical, and X-ray luminosity. Thetwo lowest luminosity objects clearly show absorption featuresidentified with stars in a host galaxy at the QSO redshift. Suchfeatures are possibly seen in two others but not in the highestluminosity object, in which nebulosity is barely discernable. Allobjects show off-nuclear changes in continuum color and in emission-lineintensities and ratios. The radio-loud objects have more luminous hostgalaxies, strong and extended forbidden O II and forbidden O III, andUV-bright nuclei. They tend to have optically luminous nuclei, highnuclear to galaxy luminosity ratios, and blue host galaxies.
|The statistical distribution of the neutral-hydrogen content of S0 galaxies|
The distribution of relative global H I content M(H I)/L(B) has beenderived for galaxies of types S0 and S0/a using a data set derived fromrecent H I observations in the literature. The relative H I content ofthese galaxies is found to show transitional properties betweenelliptical and spiral galaxies. The distribution of M(H I)/L(B) forS0/a's resembles that for spirals, and these galaxies may represent'fossil' spirals, i.e., galaxies whose gas has been severely depleted bystar formation. The distribution for S0's, however, resembles that forellipticals. The form of this distribution strongly suggests an externalorigin for most of the H I in S0 galaxies.
|H I content versus star formation and ionized gas in early-type galaxies|
A spectral analysis in the visible of 55 early type galaxies alsoobserved in the 21 cm line allows the investigation of the possiblerelationship between star formation and the H I content. No significantcorrelation is found between the H I content and various parameters likethe stellar population, the presence of an H-beta absorption component,the H-alpha and N II forbidden line emission line intensity, the absolute luminosity, the IRAS infrared flux, the X-ray emission, or the radiocontinuum flux. However, the relationship between the luminosity and the(forbidden N II)/(H-alpha) line intensity ratio is not confirmed. Theabsence of clear correlations reflects the complexity of the situation.It may suggest also that lenticular galaxies do not form an homogeneousclass of objects.
|A Determination of Relative Spectrophotometric Gradients of Galaxies - Part Three|
|Radio observations of galaxies of the Byurakan classification at 102 MHz|
Interplanetary-scintillation observations at 102 MHz have been made of131 galaxies of the Biurakan classification (1975). It is found thatgalaxies with more pronounced nuclei have higher activity in the radiorange and that scintillating components (with angular dimensions about0.1 arcsec) are more frequently found in them. The scintillatingcomponents have steep spectra.
|Radio observations at 408 MHz of E and SO nearby galaxies|
The radio observations of a complete sample of E and SO galaxies fromthe 1956 Humason catalog are presented with an absolute photographicvalue of greater than -20 in the 18 to 60 deg declination range. Thedistribution of the linear dimensions of detected sources and the radioluminosity function in the low radio power range are analyzed. GC 383has an unusual structure, and NGC 507 provides a very steep spectrum.

|H I in early-type galaxies. III - Observations of S0 galaxies|
Observations of H I in 17 selected early-type galaxies (predominantlyS0) are reported. The H I mass-to-light ratio is roughly correlated withgalaxy color (based on B-V photometry) but not with othercharacteristics of these galaxies. Morphologically normal S0 galaxiesdisplay the same general trend between H I mass-to-light ratio and coloras that followed by normal galaxies along the Hubble sequence and bypeculiar and Irr II galaxies as well.
