A Catalog of H I-Selected Galaxies from the South Celestial Cap Region of Sky
The first deep catalog of the H I Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) ispresented, covering the south celestial cap (SCC) region. The SCC areais ~2400 deg2 and covers δ<-62°. The average rmsnoise for the survey is 13 mJy beam-1. Five hundredthirty-six galaxies have been cataloged according to their neutralhydrogen content, including 114 galaxies that have no previous catalogedoptical counterpart. This is the largest sample of galaxies from a blindH I survey to date. Most galaxies in optically unobscured regions of skyhave a visible optical counterpart; however, there is a small populationof low-velocity H I clouds without visible optical counterparts whoseorigins and significance are unclear. The rms accuracy of the HIPASSpositions is found to be 1.9′. The H I mass range of galaxiesdetected is from ~106 to ~1011 Msolar.There are a large number of late-type spiral galaxies in the SCC sample(66%), compared with 30% for optically selected galaxies from the sameregion in the NASA Extragalactic Database. The average ratio of H I massto B luminosity of the sample increases according to optical type, from1.8 Msolar/Lsolar for early types to 3.2Msolar/Lsolar for late-type galaxies. The HI-detected galaxies tend to follow the large-scale structure traced bygalaxies found in optical surveys. From the number of galaxies detectedin this region of sky, we predict the full HIPASS catalog will contain~5000 galaxies, to a peak flux density limit of ~39 mJy (3 σ),although this may be a conservative estimate as two large voids arepresent in the region. The H I mass function for this catalog ispresented in a subsequent paper.

Nearby Optical Galaxies: Selection of the Sample and Identification of Groups
In this paper we describe the Nearby Optical Galaxy (NOG) sample, whichis a complete, distance-limited (cz<=6000 km s-1) andmagnitude-limited (B<=14) sample of ~7000 optical galaxies. Thesample covers 2/3 (8.27 sr) of the sky (|b|>20deg) andappears to have a good completeness in redshift (97%). We select thesample on the basis of homogenized corrected total blue magnitudes inorder to minimize systematic effects in galaxy sampling. We identify thegroups in this sample by means of both the hierarchical and thepercolation ``friends-of-friends'' methods. The resulting catalogs ofloose groups appear to be similar and are among the largest catalogs ofgroups currently available. Most of the NOG galaxies (~60%) are found tobe members of galaxy pairs (~580 pairs for a total of ~15% of objects)or groups with at least three members (~500 groups for a total of ~45%of objects). About 40% of galaxies are left ungrouped (field galaxies).We illustrate the main features of the NOG galaxy distribution. Comparedto previous optical and IRAS galaxy samples, the NOG provides a densersampling of the galaxy distribution in the nearby universe. Given itslarge sky coverage, the identification of groups, and its high-densitysampling, the NOG is suited to the analysis of the galaxy density fieldof the nearby universe, especially on small scales.

The Catalog of Southern Ringed Galaxies
The Catalog of Southern Ringed Galaxies (CSRG) is a comprehensivecompilation of diameters, axis ratios, relative bar position angles, andmorphologies of inner and outer rings, pseudorings, and lenses in 3692galaxies south of declination -17 deg. The purpose of the catalog is toevaluate the idea that these ring phenomena are related to orbitalresonances with a bar or oval in galaxy potentials. The catalog is basedon visual inspection of most of the 606 fields of the Science ResearchCouncil (SRC) IIIa-J southern sky survey, with the ESO-B, ESO-R, andPalomar Sky surveys used as auxiliaries when needed for overexposed coreregions. The catalog is most complete for SRC fields 1-303 (mostly southof declination -42 deg). In addition to ringed galaxies, a list of 859mostly nonringed galaxies intended for comparison with other catalogs isprovided. Other findings from the CSRG that are not based on statisticsare the identification of intrinsic bar/ring misalignment; bars whichunderfill inner rings; dimpling of R'1pseudorings; pointy, rectangular, or hexagonal inner or outer ringshapes; a peculiar polar-ring-related system; and other extreme examplesof spiral structure and ring morphology.

General study of group membership. II - Determination of nearby groups
We present a whole sky catalog of nearby groups of galaxies taken fromthe Lyon-Meudon Extragalactic Database. From the 78,000 objects in thedatabase, we extracted a sample of 6392 galaxies, complete up to thelimiting apparent magnitude B0 = 14.0. Moreover, in order to considersolely the galaxies of the local universe, all the selected galaxieshave a known recession velocity smaller than 5500 km/s. Two methods wereused in group construction: a Huchra-Geller (1982) derived percolationmethod and a Tully (1980) derived hierarchical method. Each method gaveus one catalog. These were then compared and synthesized to obtain asingle catalog containing the most reliable groups. There are 485 groupsof a least three members in the final catalog.

The ionization cone, obscured nucleus, and gaseous outflow in NGC 3281 - A prototypical Seyfert 2 galaxy?
Narrow-band images and long-slit spectroscopy of the central region ofthe highly inclined Seyfert galaxy NGC 3281 are presented. The image ofthe continuum-subtracted forbidden 4959 emission line shows a very clearconical morphology for the high-excitation gas. A possible similarstructure can also be seen on the other side of the nucleus, but isdimmed by patchy obscuration in the dusk. The continuum images andlong-slit spectroscopy are used to derive and map the extinction in theinner regions of NGC 3281; heavy obscuration is found along the presentline of sight to the apex of the cone, suggesting that the true nucleusis located at the apex and is obscured. Low-resolution long-slit spectraare used to study the stellar population, which is found to be old,uniform within 2.5 kpc of the nucleus, and typical of the bulges ofearly-type galaxies. It is suggested that NGC3281 may be another exampleof a 'hidden' Seyfert 1, even though there is no direct evidence for abroad-line region in this particular galaxy.

Integrated photometric properties of early type ringed galaxies
In order to elucidate the structure and evolution of barred and ovalgalaxies, over 300 of the more than 1000 galaxies in the current versionof the Catalog of Southern ringed Galaxies are subclassified intoring/pseudoring categories. Photoelectric multicolor photometry of 29ringed galaxies showing outer rings and pseudorings of the suspectedouter Lindblad resonance types reveals nothing unusual about the globalstar formation rates. The galaxies have relatively normal colors fortheir type but slightly lower than average surface brightnesses. It isdemonstrated that integrated colors (V-R)T and(V-I)T can be derived reasonably well by using standard RC2color curves originally designed for (B-V)T and(U-B)T determinations. A comparison between the presentintegrated photoelectric parameters and those in the ESO-LV data basereveals good agreement on B-band magnitudes but not total R-bandmagnitudes or B-R colors.

Simulated aperture-photometry on CCD-frames for 67 southern galaxies in B and R
As part of a large project to calibrate all the Schmidt plates of theESO Quick blue and the red survey, CCD-photometry in B and R has beenobtained for galaxies on 67 different survey fields. On these framessynthetic-aperture photometry is applied in order to present the data ina way which makes the comparison with photographic photometry easy.

Spectroscopy and photometry of elliptical galaxies. II - The spectroscopic parameters
Radial velocities, velocity dispersions, and Mg line-strength indicesare measured for 469 elliptical galaxies using four telescope/detectorconfigurations. The data have been put on a common scale; the scatter ofrepeat measurements indicates an uncertainty of + or - 10 percent and +or - 0.01 mag for single determinations of sigma and Mg2, respectively.A correction for the change in linear aperture size as a function ofdistance has been derived, and mean corrected values of sigma and Mg2are adopted. The galaxies have been assigned to groups by combining thepresent velocities with those in the redshift catalog of Huchra et al.(1983) and using the algorithm of Huchra and Geller (1982).

Star formation rates in ring galaxies from IRAS observations
IRAS and optical data for a sample of 26 ring galaxies are analyzed, andit is found that: (1) relatively high average values of far-infraredluminosity L(FIR), infrared to blue luminosity ratio L(FIR)/L(B), andcolor temperature compared to normal galaxies, implying a high recentstar formation rate; (2) evidence that a large fraction of the youngstars are located in the rings, indicating a very extended, coherentstarburst; and (3) a possible trend of the dispersion of L(FIR) amongrings as a function of ring diameter. Thus, within the uncertaintiesinherent in the study of this relatively small sample, it appears thatring galaxies represent a unique class of nonnuclear coherentstarbursts.
